Ivey, 21, entered into a plea deal that spared him from facing the death penalty if convicted in the murder of 20-year-old Claudia Rodriguez.
Police say Ivey called 911 in February 2007 and told authorities Rodriguez had shot herself in an apparent suicide attempt in the house where the two lived. Rodriguez was six months pregnant with her and Ivey's child.
She died days later, after her unborn daughter, Karen Maria Rodriguez, died.
At the time of the shooting, Ivey had been training as a prison guard.
