Eduardo Barragan's lawyer has entered a not guilty plea for him. Lawyer Andrew Monteleone says his 39-year-old client has heart palpitations and was "incoherent" at Friday's arraignment.
Police say Barragan beat 65-year-old Kay Barragan on Tuesday after an argument at their home in Searingtown, just east of New York City.
Barragan is having a psychiatric exam to see if he's fit for trial.
His Ecuadorean mother was credited with lending $2,000 to her husband to start the company that became 1-800-Mattres, famous for its slogan "leave off the last S for savings."
The Queens company was renamed 1800mattress.com to reflect online growth.
