Sinton police detained a man after a Roman Catholic priest was stabbed in the chest while outside church. Authorities say 42-year-old Rev. Shaji F. Varghese was listed in guarded condition going into surgery at Spohn Memorial Hospital in Corpus Christi.

A diocese spokesman says Sinton police have taken a man into custody. No identity has been released.

Flight nurse Michael Perry told the Corpus Christi Caller-Times that the priest had just completed saying morning Mass and was walking outside the church when a man attacked him.

No word yet on what prompted the stabbing.

Sinton is about 30 miles north of Corpus Christi.
