What was supposed to be a night of fun Monday ended in tragedy. Police said three teens were leaving a carnival at the corner of Highway 6 and Bellaire Boulevard around 8:35pm. The two females and one male were trying to cross Highway 6, which has six lanes of traffic at this location. The teens made it across the first three lanes, but as they tried to cross the last three -- the northbound lanes -- the two females were struck by an SUV.

Both female pedestrians were taken by Life Flight to Memorial Hermann Hospital. Ebony DeBose, 18, died on Tuesday. The 15-year-old, Eveonnasha Smith, is still in the hospital with a broken leg. Her condition is stable.

The owner of the SUV remained on the scene for questioning by authorities. Eyewitness News has been told there's no indication of any alcohol being involved. The pedestrians were crossing the road illegally, according to officers, and one may have been talking on a cell phone.

The driver is not expected to face any charges because the girls were not in a crosswalk.
