A federal judge told Alvarez, a business manager at a men's club in Nuevo Laredo, that he was getting the maximum sentence because the ammunition feeds the bloody drug war in Mexico.
Alvarez was stop in December by U.S. Customs and Border Protection on a random search at the international bridge in Laredo. Agents found 282 rounds of ammo and magazines for pistols and assault rifles hidden in a compartment of his SUV. He pleaded guilty in February to the ammo charge.
