Man 'in a hurry' fatally struck by train

The accident happened around 10:30pm Wednesday in far southwest Harris County. Police say according to witnesses, a man in his 50s had been drinking with a male friend and a female acquaintence at a Valero convenience store. The group left the Valero on foot and walked north on Fondren past the S. Main Street underpass. As the group approached the train tracks, they saw a train heading towards them.

The victim reportedly said he was in a hurry and went around the railroad crossing arms, which were activated with lights and alarms. The man was struck by the train and dragged several hundred feet before coming to a stop in the grass near the tracks.

He suffered multiple blunt force injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity is withheld pending notification of family members.

Union Pacific Railroad is also investigating this incident.
