Authorities say a car crossed the median along Westpark and Ocee around 9:45pm, hitting an SUV head-on. Inside the SUV were four children and two adults. None of the children were strapped in when two children were thrown from the SUV. A four-year-old girl inside that SUV, identified as Gabriella Gomez, died at the scene.
Police believe alcohol was involved and and they're looking into filing intoxicated vehicular manslaughter charges against the driver who caused the accident.
Also, investigators say the children in the SUV were not properly restrained.
"There were no car seats, no seatbelts, nothing," said Lt. John Litzmann with the Houston Police Department. "The children were thrown out of the vehicle in a rather violent fashion."
The driver of the SUV was extracted from the vehicle. She was pregnant and went into premature labor and delivered her baby a few hours later. The newborn is said to be OK.
As far as the conditions of the others who were injured, we are told some are listed as stable and others in serious condition.
Investigators say they are considering filing charges against the driver of the SUV as well as the adult passenger for not having any of the children properly restrained.
