It happened overnight as the officer was working a traffic stop in the area of Tidwell and Sandra in northeast Houston. The officer looked up and realized that a car was headed right for him and was able to jump out of the way.

Police say the driver, who ended up rear-ending his police cruiser, may have been intoxicated and was arrested.

"He is claiming to have had one mixed alcoholic beverage, but the preliminary test that we have given him shows that he is possibility above the legal limit," said Sgt. David Morgan with the Houston Police Department.

The officer in this incident was not injured.

This the second time in two days that an officer has had to jump out of the way of a motorist. Yesterday, a different HPD officer was nearly hit on the Katy Freeway near Studemont while working an accident. The driver of a car slammed into his police cruiser. That officer was not hurt. The driver in that case was also taken into custody for allegedly driving under the influence.

Officer say between 1:30am to 2:30am is one of their most dangerous times of the day because it's when when bars are closing and impaired drivers are out on the road. Authorities say accidents like the one this morning are not uncommon.
