It happened about 4am, as Sheriff Brent Lee was heading to a disturbance call. The sheriff lost control of his cruiser, hit a tree, and was thrown from the vehicle as it caught fire.
Sheriff Lee died at the scene. DPS officials say he was not wearing his seatbelt. It's unknown at this time whether the sheriff was traveling with his lights and sirens on.
