Culberson defeated big-spending wind energy executive Democrat Michael Skelly on Tuesday in a race that had been watched nationally. Culberson had led with 56 percent of the vote with about two-thirds of precincts counted. Skelly had 43 percent of the vote.
Skelly gave Culberson a scare by outmatching him in fundraising in one of Texas' most conservative districts.
Culberson is one of the most conservative members of the Texas delegation who at times parted ways with President Bush.
The three-term incumbent called the race one of his most competitive and painted Skelly as a liberal Democrat trying to buy the campaign.
