GISD votes not to reappraise homes damaged

GALVESTON, TX ROAD TO RECOVERY: How you can help | Person locator | Important phone numbers | Assistance from FEMA | Filing a claim

Last night board trustees voted two to four not to reappraise property. A reappraisal would have given residents with damaged homes a prorated tax bill. But the GISD superintendent's office says the district is already operating with a six million dollar budget deficit. This situation has some people frustrated.

"By voting this down what they've done is told everyone we don't care if you come back or not," said property owner Sandra Tetley. "We don't want to help you. We're only interested in our own financial pockets."

The agenda item could resurface. One trustee tells Eyewitness News she is hopeful that will happen.
