HOUSTON The helicopter crashed two weeks ago in Montgomery County, on the way to a breaking news story. The National Transportation Safety Board's preliminary findings show SkyEye's engine lost power, then the helicopter struck trees and hit the ground. The report also says an eyewitness saw SkyEye bank steeply to the right, before descending nose-down.
Pilot John Downhower and reporter and photographer Dave Garrett died in the crash.
Investigators with the NTSB examined the chopper's engine. The report says one specific nut to what's called the "PG line" was only finger-tight, but it's not known if that played a part in the crash.
