Veteran officer facing charges after accident

HOUSTON It all happened around 9:50pm Saturday. Officers say Captain Romeo Chapa was stopped at the corner of Barker-Cypress and River Sage drive when he was rear-ended by a red Honda. For some reason, Chapa just kept going after the wreck.

A Harris County deputy was across the street and witnessed the accident. According to the sheriff's office, Captain Chapa led the deputy on a chase of about a half mile through a subdivision. Chapa was eventually pulled over and charged with felony evading arrest.

Captain Chapa is now at St. Luke's Hospital. We're told he has a concussion.

"At this point, we have absolutely no idea why," said Chief John Laine with the Harris County Precinct 5 constable's office. "We have a theory that maybe it's just like a professional fighter. Maybe he just got his bell rung during an accident. There's no obvious explanation."

Chapa has been with the Precinct 5 constable's office for 15 years and we're told he's well respected within the department. He's currently on medical leave, but we're told that could change, pending the outcome of the investigation.
