Food items to keep after power outage

Spoiled food is unsafe to eat and should be thrown out. Nutritionists say butter, margarine, mustard, ketchup, and hard or processed cheeses can be salvaged.

Meat, eggs, opened juices, milk, and other dairy products should be tossed out.

Once you've unloaded your fridge, unplug it and leave the doors open, so residual water can dry out.
