Mayor Bill White told the Houston City Council that he is working to help find a new local owner for the Houston Comets."(It's a) relatively inexpensive way to get into sports ownership," Mayor White said. "So I hope that some folks will step up. It won't be the end of the western world, but I think it's... You know, we're proud of the Comets and I want to do my bit to see if we can keep them."

Local furniture businessman Hilton Koch bought the team from Rockets owner Les Alexander last year but the WNBA currently runs the team. Mayor White and Harris County Judge Ed Emmett have sent letters to potential owners.
