Man killed in home invasion

HOUSTON It happened around 2am at a home on Lenore near Arizona. Police say Javier Cortez, 35, and his mother were tied up with duct tape after approximately two to four men broke into the home. Police say the victims were sleeping at the time of the crime.

The suspects ransacked the home. The man died after being attacked.

"The death is unknown at this time, but these victims were tied up with duct tape and we are currently still processing the scene looking for additional evidence," said Detective C. Abbey with the Houston Police Department.

Police are only saying that the victim was severely beaten and did have blunt trauma to the head.

Cortez is married with two kids. Authorities say Cortez and his mother were the only ones inside the home at the time of the attack. Investigators are trying to determine if anything property was taken.

The victim's wife, who didn't want to be identified, says her husband worked as a house-framing contractor and owed money to a sub-contractor. However, police say at this time, they do not have a motive for this murder.

An investigation is underway.
