Astros sign top draft pick Castro

HOUSTON Castro, 20, now a junior at Stanford, batted .376 with 14 home runs and 73 RBIs in 67 games last season and helped the Cardinal reach the College World Series.

Prior to his junior season, Castro played in the Cape Cod Summer League in 2007 and batted .341 with 24 RBIs to earn a spot in the league's All-Star game.

Houston has not selected a catcher this high in the draft since making Robbie Wine the eighth overall pick in 1983. Castro is the eighth catcher selected in the first round in franchise history.
