American could cut 900 flight attendant jobs

FORT WORTH, TX The nation's biggest airline expects to lay off pilots and mechanics too, but it hasn't released numbers yet.

Fort Worth-based American today said the furloughs are necessary to overcome short-term challenges and secure the company's future.

In May, American announced it would cut capacity 11 percent to 12 percent later this year and make corresponding job cuts, but it had never put a number on the job losses. The company recently alerted regulators about the furloughs of flight attendants.
