Accused cop killer makes court appearance

HOUSTON Hung Dasion Troung, 24, appeared before a probable cause judge at 3:30am. He is charged with vehicular manslaughter.

According to court documents, Troung was speeding when he crashed into a construction zone on Katy Freeway feeder at Highway 6. He struck and killed veteran Police Officer Gary Gryder.

Two other officers were also in the area at the time. Officer Milton Sallie was able to jump out of the way before the car struck another officer, Joe Pyland, who is at the hospital with a broken leg.

Investigators say when they arrested Truong, his behavior was more than just a little odd.

"We were of the opinion, based on the first responders, he was actually laughing," said Captain Bruce Williams with the Houston Police Department. "That's why we believe there was something more than alcohol in his system. Of course, the analysis of his blood will determine that. But he did not, that was not a normal reaction to the situation at hand."

Truong appeared in court wearing scrubs because he did undergo blood alcohol tests. His charges could be upgraded to intoxication manslaughter pending the outcome of a blood test. Officials expect to give Troung a psychological exam.

Bond has been set at $50,000.
