Comets waive Shields

The Houston Comets on Friday announced that Ashley Shields, the first ever junior college player selected in a WNBA draft, was placed on waivers.Shields was chosen by the Comets in the first round (eighth overall) of the 2007 WNBA Draft.

The 5-10 guard is native of Memphis, Tenn., and attended Southwest Tennessee Community College, finishing her junior college career with an average of 25.9 points, 11.0 rebounds and 7.0 assists.

Over the course of 39 WNBA games in two seasons (2007, 2008), Shields posted an average of 4.8 points and 1.1 rebounds.

The Houston Comets host Tamika Catchings and the Indiana Fever during their first and only 2008 regular season visit to Reliant Arena on Saturday at 7:30pm.
