Two men drown over holiday weekend

A Houston man gave his own life to save his nephew from drowning in the Brazos River.According to the Houston Chronicle, 41-year-old Francisco Garcia and his 9-year-old nephew were struggling in the undercurrent at Bryan Beach Sunday afternoon. Garcia held his nephew above water, until a jet skier grabbed the boy and took him to shore. Garcia himself drowned.

Another Memorial Day weekend drowning was reported near the Texas City Dike.

The Galveston County Daily News reports a fisherman found a man floating face down early Monday morning. The man was identified as 36-year-old Valiente Flores.

Galveston County authorities say the beaches were unusually crowded over the weekend.
