UH softball eliminated in super regional

HOUSTON With the loss, the Cougars ended the 2008 season with a 54-11 record, including the program's first NCAA super regional appearance.

Despite forcing a Game 3 in the Super Regional against the Ragin' Cajuns with a 6-3 win to start the day, Houston was unable to come away with the decisive win and a trip to Women's College World Series.

Louisiana-Lafayette will face the winner of the Florida-California super regional.

UH senior Angel Shamnblin pitched all three games of the series, finishing Game 3 with four runs on 10 hits and four strikeouts. She finished her Houston career with a 94-33 record and a 36-5 mark in 2008. Her 0.97 ERA this season is a Houston single-season record.

The Cajuns used two home runs during the game to come away with the win. Vanessa Soto hit a home run in the first inning, her second home run in as many games. Holly Tankersley followed that up in the fifth inning with a two-run shot to left field.

With a three run lead, Louisiana-Lafayette scored one more run in the sixth when Melissa Verde was walked with the bases loaded, scoring Vallie Gaspard.

The 4-0 shutout was just the Cougars' fifth this season.

The Houston softball team caps the 2008 season as the only sports program in Cougar history to record 54 wins. The previous highest win total of a UH team was the 48 wins recorded by the Houston baseball team in 2000 and 2002.
