Jurors on Monday convicted Garcia of manslaughter in the October 2007 death of 59-year-old Ivan Alonso Herrero.
The altercation, in which the victim was punched, then fell and hit his head, took place in a restaurant after Herrero told a hostess that Garcia had cut in line to get a table.
The Corpus Christi Caller-Times reports Garcia, who claimed self defense, also was fined $10,000.
The victim was the father of state Rep. Abel Herrero, D-Corpus Christi.
Garcia had faced up to 20 years in prison.
