Efforts underway to keep Mt. Carmel open

Parents at Mount Carmel High School are meeting tonight to figure out how to save the cash-strapped school. The parents plan to hold a "Student State of the Union" meeting outside the southeast Houston campus. Students have been in limbo since last week when the school abruptly announced plans to close.

Yesterday, the school board discussed converting Mount Carmel into an HISD charter school or a privately funded Catholic school to solve its financial problems. Any changes would require permission from the local archdiocese.

The school is scheduled to be closed in a month.
