Demonstrators call for sheriff's resignation

HOUSTON They gathered in front of the downtown jail Sunday afternoon to demand justice for /*Clarence Freeman*/. He died after a confrontation with corrections officers on New Year's Day. Jail officials say Freeman provoked the attack, but his wife calls Freeman a good man who wanted to help police in a murder trial.

"He called me and he said, 'You know what? I just seen a kid get shot. And I'm going to stay here until the police come'," said Cherry Bradley, Freeman's widow. "Clarence was a key witness in her son's murder. According to Harris County, he can't testify in that murder anymore, 'cause he's not here."

Freeman was in prison for writing a hot check. The medical examiner ruled his death a homicide.
