Toddler drowns in family pool

CHANNELVIEW, TX Investigators say Jacob McCoy wandered away from a family gathering in Channelview Saturday. His older brother later found him at the bottom of the pool. Paramedics airlifted the 22 month old to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Drowning is one of the leading causes of death for children under 14. Most of those children were only out of an adult's sight for a few minutes.

"It does only take a moment for this kind of stuff to happen, because kids are quick," said Gidget Swift with the American Red Cross.

The Centers for Disease Control suggests parents install four foot high fencing with self latching gates around pools. Also get the toys out of the water so children won't be tempted to reach for them.
