U-Haul chase ends in Brays Bayou

HOUSTON Just after midnight, the owner of a U-Haul store saw someone breaking into one of the trucks and trying to leave. The owner called Houston police and the patrols in the area found the vehicle.

But when they tried to stop it, the driver took off, leading them on a 15 minute chase around the South Loop, up 288 and finally to the MacGregor exit. That's where the suspect cut an eastbound turn too tightly. The vehicle jumped a curb and went down an embankment into the bayou below.

"He gave up and at that point, they brought him out," said Officer J.P. Horelica with the Houston Police Department. "He was obviously cold. He had been hiding down there for a while. He kind of appreciated the fact that he was in the back of a car now."

He had been hiding in some kind of tunnel along the bayou. But K-9 units later flushed him out. That man was arrested.

Exact charges haven't been announced. Police are very thankful no one was hurt.
