UH softball improves to 9-0 in C-USA

HOUSTON The win capped the three game series, giving Houston their third-straight series sweep to open Conference USA play. It is the first time in program history that the Cougars have started conference play with a 9-0 mark.

With the win, No. 11 Houston moves to 31-4 this season and 9-0 in C-USA. The Cougars are now 7-2 all-time against the Tigers.

Junior Laurie Wagner continued her hot hitting throughout the series on Sunday. She opened the game with a two-run home run in her first at bat, scoring junior Katie Bush who reached base on a walk. She would increase the Cougars lead in the sixth inning, when on the first pitch she hit her ninth home run of the season over the center field fence.

Wagner and UH freshman Jennifer Klinkert are now tied for the team lead in home runs this season.

Houston notched its 15th shutout this season.

Senior Angel Shamblin (18-2) pitched a complete game, allowing four hits, no runs, two walks and had 15 strikeouts. The 15 Ks tie her program and single game record for strikeouts. She has accomplished the feat three times in her career, her last coming against Texas on March 5.

Up next: The Cougars will travel to Orlando, Fla., for a three-game series against UCF on April 5-6. The series will conclude on Sunday will a single game at 1pm. Houston will then return home for a mid-week game against the US Olympic Team on April 8 at 4pm at Memorial Park.
