Deadly start to spring break

GALVESTON, TX A 16-year-old girl from Deer Park drowned last night amidst strong waves and rip currents swirling around the San Luis Pass Bridge. She and a friend were swimming near the bridge when the one girl was swept away while the other girl tried to help her.

We're told by witnesses they were trying to keep themselves above water. A woman was able to pull one girl out, but the other girl didn't make it.

We're told that over the weekend, around 350 people had to be moved out of dangerous waters by lifeguards. And between Saturday and Sunday, lifeguards conducted 10 rescues.

Galveston officials say that if you're coming out to the beach, make sure you're swimming near a lifeguard.
