Game room patrons cheer during raid

HOUSTON "We're not writing tickets today, so y'all better pray to whoever you pray to," said one of the officer conducting the raid.

Police raided the game room on Telephone near Almeda-Genoa in southeast Houston yesterday, seizing more than $40,000 and 100 gambling machines. The officers actually broke open machines to get to the money.

Police say each machine costs game room operators roughly $1,500 apiece and this is just the start of the crackdown.

"We'll be doing more of these takedowns, so just be forewarned," said Captain Glenn Yorek with the Houston Police Department vice division.

Officers will charge the game room owner, but decided not to ticket customers because the gambling operation was the primary target of the raid.
