Officials from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration are investigating the deaths of two construction workers in a trench collapse. The dirt and clay trench collapsed around them yesterday at a sewage treatment plant in southern Illinois, about 15 miles south of St. Louis.

Rescue crews dug for hours, mostly by hand, to reach the two men in the trench that was eight to 10 feet deep.

An emergency official says special equipment was used to support the trench, allowing crews to enter it. Both men were dead by the time rescuers reached them.

The trench caved in during construction to install a new sewer line. The main contractor on the work says the trapped workers were from a subcontractor.
