UH softball falls to DePaul

FRESNO, CA The Coogs fall to 20-3 overall this season and 4-14 all-time against the Blue Demons.

In the bottom of the first, DePaul opened the game with a single by catcher Jackie Tarulli-Fisher. After a walk by the next batter, pitcher Becca Heteniak hit a double to right center scoring both runners for a 2-0 lead. The Blue Demons added another run in the bottom of the third on back-to-back doubles.

UH got on the board the next inning. In the top of the fourth, junior Elaina Nordstrom walked, then was replaced by pinch runner Beth Sherman, who would eventually score on a passed ball to cut the lead to 3-1.

DePaul responded in the bottom of the inning with a solo home run over the center field fence by Sandy Vojik.

The Cougars would get their offense going in the sixth inning. Junior Katie Bush opened the inning reaching base on a bunt and Nordstrom walked. Senior Laurie Wagner loaded the bases with a single to left field. Senior Amanda Grote hit a two-run double to pull the Cougars within two.

Houston, however, could not get any closer in their last at-bat of the game.

The Cougars will wrap up play at the Bingham Toyota Bulldog Classic with a 5pm game against host Fresno State.

Houston will stay in Fresno, Calif., for a Tuesday double-header against Fresno State. The Cougars will then begin conference play March 15 in Huntington, W. Va., against Marshall. UH will also play Virginia Tech (March 18) and Ohio State (March 19) before returning to Houston.
