Mexican army troops kept up a seven-hour gun battle with a group of kidnapping suspects in a house in an upscale area of the border city of Tijuana, the army reported on Tuesday. One person was found dead inside the house when soldiers finally overcame the resistance and were able to enter early Tuesday, Col. Sergio Lopez Lara of the 2nd Infantry Zone told reporters. Two others were detained inside the house. One soldier was slightly wounded in the confrontation.

Soldiers also found several assault rifles and shotguns inside the house, along with uniforms with police insignia. Kidnapping gangs in Tijuana frequently use police insignia or uniforms to evade detection and to snatch victims.

The shootout started late Monday, when police received an anonymous tip about suspects hiding in the Villafloresta neighborhood.
