UH softball improves to 13-0

The University of Houston softball team made history Saturday night, winning 13 straight games to start the 2008 season.The Cougars' previous best start was 11-0 in 2002 before falling to Baylor.

The Cougars' first win on Saturday night was a 7-3 decision over Kansas. UH junior Laurie Wagner opened the scoring with her second home run of the season in the bottom of the second inning. Senior Courtney Spittler followed with a double to drive in junior Christa Raley to give the Cougars a 2-0 lead.

After the Jayhawks were held scoreless in the third, UH's Wagner hit a line drive to right field and knocked in junior Jessica Valis for a Cougars run in the bottom of the inning.

UH added two runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth, thanks to junior Haley Valis' third homer of the season.

Kansas got home runs from Brittany Hile and Sara Ramirez.

In the Coogs' second game Saturday night, they defeated Centenary 7-1. Houston jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the second and did not look back.

The Marriot Houston Classic wraps up Sunday when Boston University and Centenary take the field. The Cougars play their last game of the tournament against Texas State.
