Houston police said the shooting happened along Tidwell Road near Mesa Road around 10 p.m. Tuesday.
Investigators said the 20-year-old woman and her boyfriend had just completed a food delivery at an apartment complex in the 9500 block of Wayside Drive.
The couple left the complex and started driving southbound on Wayside before turning left onto Tidwell Road.

Investigators said the victims saw a silver car, possibly a Mercedes or a Pontiac, come up behind them in the 7900 block of Tidwell.
The couple reportedly saw a man with long braids hang out of the passenger window and fire shots at the woman's car.
The woman was shot in the lower back, HPD said. Her boyfriend was not hurt.
"Rounds were coming through the car from the rear to the front. One of those went through, into her back. From the rounds, it appears they were probably rifle rounds and possibly pistol rounds," Lt. R. Willkens said.
The suspects turned the car around and fled after the shooting, HPD said. The wounded victim managed to pull off the road and into the parking lot of a nearby Fiesta grocery store and called 911.

HPD said the couple told investigators they have no idea why someone would shoot at them. They said they do not know the suspects.
The wanted suspects were described as two Black men -- the driver had short hair and the passenger, who was the alleged gunman, had long braids, HPD said.
