Chilling moments in Houston shooting rampage caught on bodycam

Tuesday, October 3, 2017
HOUSTON (KTRK) -- Just-released police body camera video shows the moments of chaos and uncertainty during an active shooter situation.

The video, exclusive to Eyewitness News, is from the cameras of at least three officers from the West University Police Department, one of three departments that responded to the mass shooting on Law Street in southwest Houston on the morning of September 26, 2016.

In the middle of the block was Nathan Desai, 46, an attorney whose law practice was failing. He was shooting at every vehicle that drove by.

"He's behind a tree," one officer shouts. "You've got a good angle. He's peeking. He's peeking out right now."

Police locked down streets and along with firefighters tended to victims.

"I was driving real slow and I heard, I felt it hit my arm. He shot at me twice," one man later identified as Ryan Kaylor told an officer. "I didn't get a look at him. I just got the hell out of there."

Ten people were injured that day. Countless others were in the line of fire. Firefighters questioned whether they were safe as the responded before Desai was stopped. Nine officers from West U, Houston Police Department and Bellaire Police Department fired on him before he could get to his car to re-arm himself.

"Black (Porsche) boxster loaded with ammo and weapons," echoed out of police radios.

There were plenty of moments of uncertainty. As officers approached the fatally-wounded Desai, they questioned whether he was wired.

"He may have a bomb in there," an officer said.

Desai, dressed in a replica World War II German SS uniform, died at the scene. All civilians survived and, in the chaos and barrage of gunfire, no officers were hurt.

"I'm glad you're safe, officer," a resident told an officer afterwards.

"Thank you, sir," she replied.
