Three storm chasers were killed in car crash east of Lubbock

LUBBOCK, Texas (KTRK) -- Three storm chasers were killed in a car crash east of Lubbock, the Texas Department of Public Safety confirms.

The deadly accident occurred at around 3:30 p.m. approximately 5 miles west of Spur, Texas, on FM 2794 at FM 1081.

DPS reported that a black Suburban was traveling northbound on FM 1081 and collided with a black Jeep that was traveling westbound on FM 2794.

WEATHER: Widespread severe weather expected Wednesday

Both drivers and a passenger were all pronounced dead at the scene. There were no other passengers in the vehicles.

The two-car crash is still under investigation.

The Weather Channel released a statement:
This afternoon we learned that three people died in a car accident in Texas, including two contractors for the Weather Channel, Kelley Williamson and Randy Yarnall. Kelley and Randy were beloved members of the weather community. We are saddened by this loss and our deepest sympathies go out to the families and loved ones of all involved.
