Ridgewood, N.J. -- On the corner of West Ridgewood Avenue in downtown Ridgewood, New Jersey, you'll find a gothic-inspired storefront, with, more often than not, a line of eager customers out the door. This is Black Magic Bakehouse, Ridgewood's not-so-hidden gem.[br /] [br /]Behind its alternative aesthetic and delicious pastries is Deanne Veliky, whose childhood hometown, Bergen County, served as the perfect location for her bustling business. But before settling in her current Ridgewood storefront, Veliky's business actually began in her mom's garage.[br /] [br /]"I ended up moving back to New Jersey and outfitted my mom's garage into a baking studio. And that's when I started doing custom orders and pop-ups and filming TikToks and stuff like that," Veliky recounts. "From there, it was just kind of the snowball effect."[br /] [br /]Her pastries feature a signature sourdough brioche recipe - which she spent over two years perfecting - and span a variety of flavors, from classic bakery fare like jelly donuts and cinnamon rolls to more unique offerings like a buttermilk fried chicken croissant and a fan-favorite pretzel cinnamon roll. [br /] [br /]Though some of the classic options are available year-round, the majority of the menu rotates monthly, with additional limited offerings for holidays: this St. Patrick's Day, some of the special items include a Corned Beef Croissant and Guinness Chocolate Cake.[br /] [br /]"Anything that we do, I always want to try to either put a twist on the classic or do something completely different that you can't get anywhere around here," Veliky says. "I like to really explore everything that's out there."[br /] [br /]Beyond the bakery's delicious offerings, Black Magic Bakehouse also seeks to support its local community, from platforming local artists to uplifting its crew of baristas and bakers.[br /] [br /]"I like to work with local artists. Our barista, he did our logo for our sweatshirts, which is awesome," Veliky says. "I'm grateful to be able to do this every day, and I think being able to provide stability for people to have employment - I think being able to give people this little bit of enjoyment, just for a smidge of their day, is really beautiful."[br /] [br /]Judging by Veliky and the bakery's ever-growing following, it looks like Black Magic Bakehouse will serve as a source of joy - and deliciousness - for Ridgewood and beyond for years to come.[br /][br /]Click here to learn more about Black Magic Bakehouse.
