Officers were called out to Tuam near Tierwester just after 1am in Third Ward.
When they arrived, they found a man who had been injured.
The victim is now undergoing surgery at a nearby hospital.
Investigators say they are searching the are for witnesses, but so far have no other details.
When asked how many shots were fired, detectives said "too many to count."
