LUBBOCK, Texas (KTRK) -- Police in Lubbock say the Texas Tech student accused of killing a university police officer had an encounter with police the day before the murder.

At a news conference Thursday morning, Lubbock Police Chief Greg Stevens said Hollis Daniels was stopped Sunday by a patrol unit investigating a burglary at a home.

The chief said a gun was stolen from that home.

Daniels was let go before he refused to let police search his car.

Police still wouldn't say how Daniels got the gun he used in the killing.

Texas Tech has asked the Lubbock Police Department to take over an independent review of what led to the murder of Officer Floyd East Jr., Monday night at the police station.
