12-year-old with autism hit by vehicle after wandering off in NW Harris Co., captain says

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas (KTRK) -- A 12-year-old with autism who wandered away from his home was hit by a vehicle Monday morning in northwest Harris County, Capt. Donald Wine said.

Investigators said the crash happened in the 5700 block of Greenhouse at about 6:30 a.m. on Monday.

The boy was initially said to be in critical condition at a hospital by Sheriff Ed Gonzalez. An update from Capt. Wine a short time later described the boy's condition as stable.

By the time the boy was being treated at the hospital, his mother had called authorities looking for him.

The Harris County Sheriff's Office has a new program called Project Lifesaver that is designed to help find missing elderly and people with special needs. It is a tracking system through a bracelet worn by the person .
