Deputies were called about a weapons disturbance at a Frontier Inn Extended Stay in the 16500 block of North Freeway at North Vista Drive at about 8:30 a.m. Thursday.
In an update, deputies said the man had called 911 to report that he had killed his wife. He also told authorities that he was armed with a knife and gun.
When deputies arrived, they said the man opened the door but then closed it really quickly. When deputies retreated, the man pointed a gun at them, investigators said.
That's what led two deputies to fire their weapons, killing the man.
It is unknown how many shots were fired or where the man was hit.
Investigators believe the man had been living at the Extended Stay, but they found no evidence on the property that suggested a murder happened there.

"It does not appear that he killed anyone at this location. They are looking into whether he even had a wife and trying to determine her welfare and whereabouts," said Maj. Wayne Kuhlman, with the Harris County Sheriff's Office.
The suspect has not yet been identified.
Constable Herman asked residents to avoid the area as North Vista Drive has been shut down for investigation.
No officers were reported injured in the incident.
