4 people arrested for illegal street racing in Harris County as legal racing event begins

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- Deputies are warning drivers to be on high alert, specifically on I-10, as street racers try to avoid law enforcement.

Four people have been arrested for illegal racing while the legal racing event TX2K19 is in town. TX2K19 is an annual racing event that brings thousands of people to Baytown.

Two drivers, William Johnson, 23, and Kent Droughton, 19, were captured on I-10 Tuesday, allegedly going 90 miles per hour near Barker Cypress.

Daniel Wojdyla was arrested on the Katy Freeway near Barker Cypress on Wednesday night. He was charged with racing on a highway.

Richard Treacy-Newell was arrested on Thursday at 3:20 a.m. for racing on a highway on the Katy Freeway near Eldridge Parkway.

Deputies from multiple agencies will be on patrol all weekend.



Pct. 5 Harris County Constable Ted Heap's office said that with street racing being illegal in Texas, events like TX2K19 are a good option for people who have the "need for speed."
