HOUSTON (KTRK) -- A year before World War 1 began and Charlie Chaplin debuted his character "The Tramp," Dr. Charles Hurwitz, Ph.D. was joining the world.

Now, 104 years later, he is celebrating his birthday surrounded by his friends and family on April 1.

Hurwitz served in the Army in the Philippines during World War II. He then worked as a research scientist at the VA hospital in New York from 1950 until he moved to Houston in 1998.

He continued his research at Texas Children's Hospital for the next 15 years. His last publication was in 1995 at the age of 82.

Hurwitz has four children, six grandchildren and two great-grand-children.

At almost 104-years-old, he still works out three times a week and is active in the Evelyn Rubenstein Jewish Community Center of Houston.
