W Beltway 8 reopens after Harvey flooding

Monday, September 11, 2017
HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- After days of repair work that followed extensive flooding, four southbound lanes of the West Sam Houston Tollway reopened before the start of the work week.

The right lane and the southbound ramp to Memorial Drive is expected to remain closed until early next week, according to a Harris County Tollroad Authority spokesperson.

There is roadwork continuing on the southbound lanes after the reopening.

Officials also said the tolls will resume around the area Monday. Tolls were waived in the wake of Harvey.

Hurricane Harvey left a heavily traveled stretch of the roadway under several feet of water for nearly two weeks, which snarled traffic around the Houston area as residents returned to work after the storm.

The tollway's northbound lanes reopened on Thursday after the water was pumped out of the beltway, but the damaged southbound lanes remained completely closed for repair.
