According to the agency, scammers call victims in areas hit by natural disasters and tell them that insurance premiums are past due. The scammers then direct the victim to a website to make the payment immediately to ensure that coverage will not be interrupted.
Insurance companies and agents will not use robocalls to collect overdue premiums, and the agency advises victims in flooded areas to contact insurance agents directly with any concerns about premium payment.
If you suspect that you have been the victim of a scam, call the FEMA Disaster Fraud Hotline toll free at 1-866-720-5721 and report the incident on the FTC's website.
