The Houston Police Department said officers were at 3400 Ocee Street at about 6 p.m., responding to a reported disturbance involving two to three men with guns who were allegedly walking through a parking lot, confronting people.
After detaining the men at the scene, police said they then received a call from a mother who had taken her 2-year-old daughter to a nearby hospital after she was hit by a vehicle.
The two-year-old was confirmed dead at the hospital.
Authorities say they're unsure exactly what happened.
Details are limited, and the Houston Police Department announced that the investigation is ongoing.
