Knox began restoring a retired patrol car in 2015, with the goal of bringing back one Houston Police Department vehicle from each decade. The first vehicle he fixed up was a 1996 Chevrolet Caprice. He later added a 1988 Chevrolet Caprice Classic.
In May 2020, Knox died in the line of duty when the HPD helicopter he was in crashed while on a call for service. Those closest to him were determined not to let his passion fade.
Today, Vintage HPD is operated by Knox's widow, Keira Knox-Giles, who continues the mission he started more than a decade ago.
The organization maintains the vehicles that appear at community events, car shows, and parades throughout the Houston area. Most recently, part of the collection traveled to Washington, D.C., for National Police Week.
The nonprofit is also expanding its collection of vintage patrol cars. They have restored and added a third vehicle to its fleet: a 2004 Ford Crown Victoria.
It will make its debut Saturday, June 6, at the nonprofit's first-ever 5K fundraiser. The Vintage HPD Foxtrot 5K is being held at John Paul Landing Park in Cypress. You can register for the race, here.
