Jason Ganaway, 48, was taken into custody Friday morning and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
In court filings, Ganaway notes that he's served with the sheriff's office for 16 years.
The victim told investigators that he was driving on FM 529 near Westgreen just after midnight, May 25, when he signaled to change lanes.
He said the driver of a black Camaro, later identified as Ganaway, appeared to believe the victim was cutting him off.
He told deputies that Ganaway pulled alongside him, rolled down his window, and pointed a gun at him.
The two men then continued east on FM 529, according to the criminal complaint, until the victim made an abrupt turn onto Fry in a bid to lose Ganaway.
Investigators interviewed Ganaway days later, but said his story kept changing and was filled with inconsistencies.
At first, they said he denied being involved in the encounter, but later said he had only told the victim, "Man, what's up?"
He then reportedly claimed that no words were exchanged between the two.
When pressed again, investigators say Ganaway claimed he couldn't remember whether he had spoken to the victim but that he might have said, "What the (expletive) is your problem?" They said Ganaway admitted to being mad about the victim cutting him off.
Ganaway reportedly told investigators that he didn't have a gun with him the night of the crime.
Last Friday, the District Attorney's Office approved the charge against Ganaway, and the charge was filed on Thursday.
Records show Ganaway has posted his $10,000 bond, but the sheriff's office said a booking photo wasn't yet available for him.
HCSO said a review was underway and that Ganaway has been relieved of duty.
