HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) -- A United Express flight bound for Houston was diverted to San Antonio on Wednesday after a battery began smoking on board, airline officials said.

The United Express flight, which was operated by Mesa Airlines, was flying to Bush Intercontinental Airport on Wednesday morning when a passenger's battery began to smoke on the plane, according to Mesa Airlines officials.

Officials said that a containment bag was used for the smoking battery, and the flight was diverted to San Antonio Intercontinental Airport (SAT).

The aircraft landed at SAT and taxied to the gate without incident, according to airline officials. Crews said they are working on a recovery flight for the passengers on board to get them on their way to Houston's IAH.

Officials did not say what caused the battery to start smoking on board.
